Flight Dynamics Engineer (Junior)
Within the ALTEC Mission Operation & Training team, the candidate will support the Flight Dynamics activities in the frame of new challenging projects in which the company is involved (e.g. LEO cargo return, Space Rider, In-Orbit Service…), in terms of design, development and validation of Flight Dynamics products and supporting the implementation of specific mission control system applications and products used for mission operations execution. Current projects require traditional Orbital Flight Dynamics approach for LEO orbits, but some of them are now focusing on Proximity, RV & Docking capabilities, as well as non-destructive re-entry and Landing / Splash-down.
DUTIES
The candidate will be part of the Flight Dynamics team and as part of the project teams, interacting with other ALTEC disciplines.
He/she shall have good communication skills, pro-active attitude in facing and solving problems and inclination to team working.
The main activities in which the candidate will be involved are:
Operations Preparation
- Support the definition and optimization of FDS processes and workflows for a specific mission profile, definition of FDS requirements based on mission characteristics and conops, including contribution to mission analysis when required
- Support the analysis of the FDS needs, approach and safety aspects for Proximity, RV & Docking, Departure operations and non-destructive re-entry, including the definition, implementation and test of associated algorithms, and support the development, implementation and test of the FDS tool and system
- Develop algorithms, and perform simulations: state estimation, maneuver detection, error propagation, and collision probability analysis
- For a specific mission, based on the mission profile, support the maneuvers planning and orbital event analysis, compute the ground visibility passes to support planning of the on-board activities, calculation of the system’s orbit during the various operational phases
- Support the definition approach and procedure to establish initial orbit knowledge and support first acquisition using launcher data and early telemetry
- Support to the orbit and re-entry trajectory mission analysis
Operations Validation
- Collaborate in the definition, generation, validation and updating of the FD operative products (e.g. procedures and database)
- Support for the preparation and participation in System Verification and System Operations Validation Test campaigns;
Mission Operations Execution
- As Flight Dynamics position of the Flight Control Team, support simulation campaign, real-time mission operations during LEOP, Commissioning, In-orbit, Rendezvous and docking and re-entry, providing both on-console/on-call support.
General Requirements / Skills
- Background: Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field;
- Knowledge of Flight Dynamics principles in mission operations;
- Knowledge of the STK application, as well as any other Flight Dynamics tool
- Ability to analyze complex data sets;
- Knowledge of Linux based Operating Systems.
- Knowledge of computer programming (C, C++, Matlab, Python).
- knowledge of MS Office Suite.
- Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken;
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and communicate clearly even in time-critical situations;
- Good organizational skills and ability to coordinate with internal and external teams.
- Flexibility.
- Good reporting capabilities.
- Orderly, reliable and disciplined approach to the execution of console operations by executing dedicated ground/flight procedures.
- Ability to work in a calm and correct manner under pressure.
- Autonomy.
Additional skills (they can be considered an advantage, but they are not mandatory)
- Knowledge of GODOT and Orekit environments
- Knowledge of Mission Control Software and integration with Flight Dynamics system
- Experience with software development life cycle and agile methodologies
- Knowledge of SSA (Space Situational Awareness) activities and CAM (Collision Avoidance Maneuver) management;
