EPIC ENGINEER – COLUMBUS
ALTEC is looking for an Engineer in order to fulfil the European Planning and Increment Coordination (EPIC) position within the ESA ISS Flight Control Team (FCT) at the Columbus Control Centre, located at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) site in Oberpfaffenhofen/Germany.
The EPIC team coordinates and plans ESA activities on the International Space Station. EPIC develops and organizes the mission timeline for European operations in coordination with the ISS International Partners Planning Teams (NASA, JAXA, etc.).
In the control room, EPIC supports daily operations during office hours in the position of Columbus Operation and Mission Execution Timeline (COMET) Engineer: COMET performs real-time planning of the activities on the ISS. The EPIC/COMET team is also supporting real-time operations for some European payloads.
The candidate will be certified after a period of training consisting mainly of lessons and training-on-the-job at the main site or on other ESA/NASA sites.
Duties
Your activity will cover the following:
- Support Increment mission operations preparation and near-real time Increment execution activities, with focus on payload operations and planning.
- Maintenance and development of Planning Products, e.g. Weekly Look Aheads, Short Term Plans.
- Preparation of new ISS Increment ESA Missions including:
- Review of Increment and experiment documents;
- Establishing Planning documents, e.g. On-orbit Operations Summary (OOS), Planning Request (PR)…;
- Performing Planning product reviews;
- Participation to Interface Meeting with the International Partners Planning Teams.
- On console, in the real-time environment:
- operational planning coordinating planning inputs and issues with other European User Centers, International Partners Flight Control Teams and Planners;
- coordination within the ESA FCT for the approval of all real-time replanning products;
- next days activity replanning coordination due to an off-nominal scenario during execution;
- support to the real-time operations execution for the European payloads assigned to EPIC/COMET
EPIC interfaces with a variety of operational parties, e.g. Columbus Flight Directors, STRATOS Team, Ground Control Team, Engineering Support Team, European User Operation Centers, NASA and other ISS International Partners FCT, other ESA Increment Management and Payload groups.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & TECHNICAL SKILLS
- A Master Degree in an engineering or scientific discipline is required.
- Ability to work in a multinational team.
- Good communication, planning and reporting skills.
- Experience in Human Space Flight (preferred).
- Fluent in English, both in speech and writing.
- Willingness to work on console during shift time.
SOFT SKILLS
- System-minded and a team player.
- Able to work in an interdisciplinary team.
- Self-starter, able to work independently with little or no supervision.
ADDITIONAL ASSETS
German language skills would be an asset.
